Goodwood’s 30th anniversary of the Festival of Speed aptly coincides with Porsche celebrating their 75th anniversary of its very first sports car – the 356.


Back then, it arrived with a 1.0-lire turbocharged engine (amusingly named “Boosterjet”) that gave it an enthusiastic character and made it heaps of fun to drive, but with the revisions to Singapore’s Vehicle Emissions Scheme tax/rebate structure this year, that’s been swapped out for a hybrid model which falls into the maximum rebate tier for its green credentials.

The wreck was transported to NTCE Barcelona in May 2014 and the eight-strong restoration team began work, using their own time at evenings and weekends. They searched all over Europe for parts, asking Nissan dealers to search their warehouses for old stock; some components were bought used and also restored. Juan added, “We wanted the car to be accurate in every way, and were lucky to get the very old drawings and service manuals from NTCE. We followed all the fine adjustments to get the exact Paris-Dakar race set-up.”

Volvo Cars Singapore showcases the all-new Volvo Retail Experience (VRE) concept at the re-opening of the Volvo showroom


Visitors were treated to a range of informative displays, family-friendly activities, and a multitude of mouth-watering Porsche cars both new and old. History buffs and car enthusiasts could trace the evolution of the iconic 911 model from its genesis in the 356, via 5 generations of classic 911 and right up to the current '991' generation, while motorsports and racing enthusiasts were enthralled by the actual 1998 Le Mans 24H race-winning Porsche 911 GT1, as well as a replica of the Porsche 919 Hybrid that won the 2015 race. In addition, Earl Bamber, New Zealand racing driver and co-winner of this year's Le Mans race, was also on hand to sign autographs and answer questions from fans of Porsche Racing.

Pitch the new Camry round a sharp bend, and the car immediately feels different from the soft wallowy Camrys of before. Body roll is minimal and the car is well balanced throughout the corner. The car is well damped with an impressive compression and rebound rate from the suspension. This kept the chassis flat as I took on a series of left-and-rights around the slalom stage.
